Born in 1893, Don Venancio was the first Botran Merino brother to be inspired by glorious Guatemala. Botran 18 is a blend for him. His passion, fire, and determination – in one bottle.

This expression from Guatemala might catch your eye. The blend of 5 to 18-year-old rums shares a similar profile to aged, grain-based distillates. Meanwhile, the complex, "dynamic" process used for maturation shares similarities with the Solera method of sherry. In this case, a combination of American whiskey, Port, and sherry casks are used, the latter adding a nutty character to the finish.

Sitting at the top of their range, the rums used for Solera 1893 are made with virgin sugar cane honey and are matured for between 5 and 18 years before going into the solera.

In addition to the technique practiced for this rum, the Solera, the latter aged at altitude, which gives it this inimitable taste. The barrels used are old sherry, port, and bourbon barrels.

Tasting Notes:

Color: Deep mahogany with beams of reddish light.

Nose: Elegant and expressive. Notes of wood, cocoa, vanilla, and caramelized aromas followed by maple syrup, red berries, and spicy perfumes. A bit sweeter again, with a brown sugar note that pairs well with the coffee aromas underneath.

Palate: Robust, rich, succulent, coffee-infused, dry and elegant. Notes of caramelized fruit, maple syrup, spices, cocoa, and delicate red berries.

Finish Caramelized notes and red berries.

Not overwhelmingly complex, but the most balanced of the bunch and a solid cocktailing option.

Blend of 5-18-year-old rums.
