Originally launched in 1879, I.W. Harper, the venerable Kentucky Bourbon returns to distribution within the United States this year (2015) after a long absence. Created by the Bernheim brothers, Isaac and Bernard, the brand was named after Isaac's first two initials (I.W.), but the surname Harper was chosen for broader market appeal. With a high corn mashbill (86%) this 15 year old offering was distilled at the New Bernheim Distillery in Louisville (now part of Heaven Hill) and aged most recently at the Stitzel-Weller Distillery, and bottled at Diageo’s Tullahoma, Tennessee facility.

Sweeter up front with grain and corn immediately apparent, I.W. Harper Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey 15-Year-Old then moves into notes of oak, raisin, caramel, spice, and vanilla. The finish leaves a long and lasting mouthfeel perfect for enjoying as bourbon the rocks, or whiskey neat to truly appreciate the full flavor profile.

With its art deco decanter-bottle packaging, I.W. Harper 15 years sounds and looks like one of those whiskeys that’s been around forever but you’re not quite familiar with. As it turns out, there’s a good reason for that impression.

On the nose: lots of mint, cinnamon, dark chocolate, and some lumber. The body features ample citrus notes, more baking spice, and emerging chocolate and caramel on the backside. There is heat at first, but this settles down into supple sweetness and a finish that is gentle.
